World's Oldest Human Remains Discovered in Israel

World's Oldest Human Remains Discovered in Israel
JERUSALEM — Israel archaeologists have discovered human remains dating from 400,000 years ago, challenging conventional wisdom that Homo sapiens originated in Africa, the leader of excavations in Israel said on Tuesday.
Avi Gopher, of Tel Aviv University's Institute of Archaeology, said testing of stalagmites, stalactites and other material found in a cave east of Tel Aviv indicates that eight teeth uncovered there could be the earliest traces so far of our species.
"Our cave was used for a period of about 250,000 years -- from about 400,000 years ago to about 200,000 years ago," he told AFP.
"The teeth are scattered through the layers of the cave, some in the deeper part, that is to say from 400,000 years and through all kinds of other layers that can be up to 200,000 years. The oldest are 400,000 years old", he added."
That calls into question the widely held view that Africa was the birthplace of modern man, said Gopher, who headed the dig at Qesem Cave.
"It is accepted at the moment that the earliest Homo sapiens that we know is in east Africa and is 200,000 years old, or a little less. We don't know of anywhere else where anyone claims to have an earlier Homo sapiens," he said.
Gopher said the first teeth were discovered in 2006 but he and his team in Israel waited until they had several samples, then conducted years of testing, using a variety of dating methods, before publishing their findings.
Digging continues at the cave, the university said, with Israel researchers hoping to "uncover additional finds that will enable them to confirm the findings published up to now and to enhance our understanding of the evolution of mankind, and especially the appearance of modern man."

Scotch, Cigars, Family - Mark Twain Awakens After 100 Years

Scotch, Cigars, Family - Mark Twain Awakens After 100 Years

Did Mark Twain really die?
No way, he is having a last laugh on all of us!
By Joel Leyden
Israel News Agency

Hartford, Connecticut ---- December 20, 2010 ..... Before there was Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube - there was Mark Twain.

Quicker than the digital status updates that we have all become familiar with, Mark Twain's creative, aggressive and friendly wit jumped all over the globe touching millions. Making them smile, laugh and reflect.

This American legend, globe trotting journalist and renowned author born Samuel Langhorne Clemens in Florida, Mo. in 1835, who worked on a Mississippi river boat and at the age of 13 left school to become a printer's apprentice, became the most famous man in the world by 1900.

Traveling through Hartford, Connecticut, my friends there insisted that I visit the house that Twain lived. Where Twain wrote such epic stories such as The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn andThe Prince and the Pauper.

A very new, modern visitors center which was built in 2003 stands next to Sam's majestic three story, wooden home. A home which embraced the warm love of his wife Olivia and three children. Just glancing at this majestic house, once could start to feel the vibrancy, the life that was Mark Twain.

After all, respected for his highly clever wit, wisdom and playful nature, Mark Twain never really died. At least he planned it that way.

For before he died of a heart attack in his sleep on April 21, 1910, Twain penned an autobiography. Volume one of three books of approximately 500,000 words from the University of California's Mark Twain Project was just released. And in the next few years more nouns and verbs describing the real world according to Mark Twain will be read by many.

So it was a very special time to be entering into the intimate environment of Mark Twain. From the New England Oak trees towering above to the gas Victorian lamps and warm fireplaces within.

Hartford is no New York. So quiet that one can hear the wind making bushes sing. And perhaps it was this tranquility and the love of his family that enabled, inspired Sam, (as he is affectionately referred to as in this home) to write as he did. For this talented, fun, cranky, observant humanitarian had seen much of the US, Europe and Israel. In fact, Twain spent much time staying as a quest in people's homes in England and in Germany. Always looking, taking it all in and then spitting it out in the most flamboyant manner.

One can write miles about the adventures of Mark Twain. From his poor, humble and romantic childhood to his criticism of the US government, opposition to the Philippine - American War which inspired Twain to found the Anti-Imperialist League and his creation and lost investment on the Paige newspaper Compositoron. But I will only articulate and limit my feelings about Sam from that house he lived in. One can tell much from what is on both the floor and the walls and in between.

As I sit writing just a few miles away under the harsh electric light and fingers dancing on a hard plastic laptop computer, Sam would sit not far from a warm, crackling fireplace, under the soft glow of gas lights and a green billiard table to remind Sam that life was one big game.

It was getting up to take the shots, the fine tuning as to how you hit those colorful balls, the comfort of over 40 cigars a day and sipping a warm Scotch. Integrate this with the love of his children, telling bedtime stories as they smiled and sat on his lap and his out there attitude that you could just sense from the white suits he donned.

Each room of this 19 room house would own its own presence. From the red Moroccan sitting room, the soft pink India dressing room, the children's second floor school room with dolls and cards, an indoor glass Victorian garden with green leaves sprouting in all jungle directions, the master bedroom with its Angel decorated bed to Sam's man cave.

In the back of the room is his desk. But Twain would not sit at this desk for his eyes would become too distracted by the pool table directly in front. So in a small corner at a small, wooden desk Twain would take his wet ink pen and and create magic on paper.

This room was off limits for all except for his close, black servant George who shared a bedroom next door. And male friends who would tell tales of shrewd businessman, women in skirts, corrupt politicians, soldiers fighting off swords and the bad reception of the telephone he had there. Twain was one of only three people who had a telephone in Hartford.

Twain, with a smile, had described his man cave as: "There ought to be a room in this house to swear in. It's dangerous to have to repress an emotion like that."
Twain would work both in his study and while in bed as his children played with their nine cats and three dogs. He even had a rope tied to the gas fed chandelier to bring the light closer to him as he donned his large round glasses and wrote notes to himself.

From all I gathered, that transcended the many solitude hours of writing of all that he saw and crystallized wisdom from it, was a man who had a deep conviction, understanding and passion for life. He worked hard, he played hard. It is said that he held dinner parties every night. Not only would he entertain his guests but also his children who would sit quietly outside the dining room on the stairway steps listening to each and every word.

Sam, his wife and the children created a secret game. The children, even when supposed to be in bed sleeping, would make up different colored cards. If Mark Twain was to swear and the children heard it, they would hold up a red card that only their mother could see through the open dining room door.

As Sam puffed away on one of his many cigars and entered a discussion of American politics or his contempt of Jane Austen, perhaps the word damn would come running out of his mouth and reach the innocent ears of his three young daughters. Out came the red card and his wife would ask Mark softly: "how is the red wine tonight?'

The adventurer, explorer, author, journalist - the man who would not bow down to any beast or foe - respected the sanctity of family life. Olivia made sure that the public would see a sane, American icon while privately enjoying the wild steamboat captain underneath.

“The recent release of Mark Twain’s unexpurgated autobiography has been an unexpected bestseller," Jacques Lamarre, Manager of Communications and Special Projects of the The Mark Twain House and Museum told the Israel News Agency.

"One hundred years after his death, he once again has captured the nation’s attention and gotten people talking, thinking and laughing. It has certainly thrown a lot of press attention and visitation our way. We hope that once people have had a chance to digest some of the first volume that they will want to come to his Hartford home to see where so many of the stories in the autobiography are set.”

Lamarre adds: “In the year-and-a-half since I have been working at The Mark Twain House and Museum, I’ve developed a much greater appreciation for how complex a man Samuel Clemens was. He was a loving family man, a world-famous author, an unflinching social credit, a failed business man, and one of the wittiest people to walk this Earth. I am constantly humbled when I enter his home and know how much history, joy and pain was created under that roof. The Mark Twain House is every bit as fantastic, jumbled and intriguing as the man who built it.”

As an American who has lived in Israel for over 20 years, I must give thanks to Mark Twain for his graphic description of what was then known as Palestine: "Palestine sits in sackcloth and ashes. Over it broods the spell of a curse that has withered its fields and fettered its energies. Where Sodom and Gomorrah reared their domes and towers, that solemn sea now floods the plain, in whose bitter waters no living thing exists - over whose waveless surface the blistering air hangs motionless and dead - about whose borders nothing grows but weeds, and scattering tufts of cane, and that treacherous fruit that promises refreshment to parching lips, but turns to ashes at the touch."

For only with this news report from Sam in the 1860's, can one truly and completey appreciate how modern day Israel has turned this barren, desert land into a vibrant, blossoming and green nation filled with fine wine, sweet honey, religious tolerance, free speech, medical research and a hi tech industry which reflects the very best of the modern, democratic world.

Sam inked his magic in the rear, far right corner
when not drinking scotch with his buddies.

No news or feature article could do justice for Mark Twain.

His life and imagination were just too overshadowing for 500 or a 1,000 words to fit.
Perhaps only a Mark Twain quote would be a fair way to conclude this small feature and endear you to read more of Twain, visit his home in Hartford and respect the greatness that has touched children then and now. A man who after 100 years would say "surprise, you ain't got rid of me yet and there is more to come."

"It has been reported that I was seriously ill," said Twain. "It was another man; dying - it was another man; dead - the other man again. As far as I can see, nothing remains to be reported, except that I have become a foreigner. When you hear it, don't you believe it. And don't take the trouble to deny it. Merely just raise the American flag on our house in Hartford and let it talk."

That the third volume of Mark Twain's autobiography is expected to pack several punches at both people and society, Twain is still very much with us.

Raise that flag tall and expect to keep it up and waving for another 100 years.

The Jewish Agency And Why Does Israel PR Fail?

The Jewish Agency And Why Does Israel PR Fail?

By Joel Leyden
Israel News Agency

Jerusalem, Israel ---- December 17, 2010 ...... Just a few days ago I applied for the position of VP Marketing Communications for the Jewish Agency. Within 48 hours I was told that I that I was too late to apply. They were interviewing "finalists".

Is one ever too late to apply for a job? That is until someone is actually made an offer and signs a contract?

No. It was an excuse. Was I disappointed? Yes. Was I angry? Yes. But not for the obvious reasons.

I have been in the international public relations and public affairs business for over 20 years. In that time I was approached to create the first commercial Website back in 1995, the first Website for the Prime Minister's Office, the first English news site out of Israel and the first Website for the IDF. I successful integrated classic PR, advertising and journalism into Web 2.0 - social media.

So what credentials did I lack?

Well, I have team experience from serving in IDF combat units and the spokesperson's unit in the IDF. The Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs retains me to train their diplomats. And I was ready to give up far more money in a successful, private international business in digital PR, SEO, social networking and crisis communications.

So what was I missing?

I ask this question publicly to the Jewish Agency. Not because I need their money. Not because I love the Jewish Agency.

The reason is that Israel will not lose an opportunity to miss an opportunity.

I am calling out the Jewish Agency on the candidate who does secure this position and kindly ask the public to raise the following questions.

How many years experience in international marketing and branding does that Jewish Agency professional have?
How many years experience in international PR does that Jewish Agency professional have? Can you show us how that professional controls the most important medium - the Internet? What is their experience in new media, social networking, SEO, online branding, journalism, media distribution, Google Adwords and Google Adsense?
Lastly, can you show us how they have made one, major issue pertaining to Israel sparkle and shine?
Will this PR and marketing professional for the Jewish Agency work with or work against the private and successful immigration organization Nefesh B'Nefesh?

Ya see, it's not the job. It's Israel's near total lack of professionalism in conducting it's PR activities.

The Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs has made great strides in recent years in improving their professional public affairs operations with such stars as Amir Gissin, David Saranga, Noam Katz, Yaron Gamburg, Ron Prosor, Yigal Palmor, Jonathan Peled, Arye Mekel, Ronit Ben Dor, Joel Lion, Eliaz Luf and political appointees Michael Oren, Tal Brody, Ashley Perry and Gil Lainer.

At the IDF Avital Leibovitz and Aliza Landes makes us proud. And spokesperson for the Israel Police Micky Rosenfeld has both the smile and the soundbytes.
And then we have superstar Mark Regev at Israel Prime Minister's Office. We had mega super star Daniel Seaman at the GPO - but opps - he's gone.

But this elite public affairs team still faces massive internal and external walls. The internal walls I will not go into detail as Israel has enough problems with strategic information getting to her enemies but some basic facts do remain and need to be addressed.
Israel PR suffers from a lack of money. Lack of budget. I would think that the firefighters received a greater annual budget than the Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs gets for Hasbara or PR. And we saw what job the firefighters did with the recent Carmel Forest fire disaster.

Israel also suffers from a lack of professional manpower. Again, I will not go into logistics. But with more money budgeted for PR manpower and operations, Israel would be able to confront the professional efforts of pro Islamic Jihad organizations such as Fenton Communications which was paid almost $400,000 to make Israel look bad on behalf of Qatar and Turkey for their "Flotilla" operation.

Last, but not least, it's a numbers game.
There is more Arab oil money than Israeli scheckels and more Arabs than there are Israelis. More representatives of Arab states in the UN, EU and the US State Department than whatever Israel has.

Who's winning the PR war?
Well before we can answer that question, is it really a war?
According to the Palestinians, they are only throwing rocks at Israel tanks.

Their public relations machine is working. And working very effectively.
And most of the world public has bought it hook, line and sinker. As Palestinian terrorists attack Israeli tanks with missiles, rockets and automatic gunfire, the world witnesses Palestinian children throwing rocks!

As Palestinian terrorists pump bullets into pregnant Jewish mothers and execute Jewish babies we only see Reuters, AP and AFP images of injured Palestinian children.

Who's winning the public relations war? Syria, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey, Hamas, Iran, Jihadists and the Palestinians.

We are engaged in two wars - a bloody, sweaty battle of bullets and a real-time digital media war of words.
We are losing both fronts because Israel's governmental public relations and public affairs machine is weak and ineffective.

The PR war defines public opinion, public opinion decides governmental policy and that policy decides who wins. Ultimately, public relations will decide Israel's future security. It's stature as a democracy, its economic health and its very borders.

One must take a very close, objective look at Israel's present PR efforts to understand why we have and continue to lose.
Many who lead Israel's PR war are more focused on domestic Israeli public opinion than world opinion or the opinion of our enemies. Just look at some who are in contact with the international media from Jerusalem.

Who are these people? How old are they? What experience do they have in crisis communications management? Who do they consult? How effective is their coordination with other ministries? How free are they to act in real-time? Do they have the backing and logistical, financial support of Israel's Prime Minister?

Yes, we do have a handful of professional public affairs people in Jerusalem, when what is urgently required during war is a well financed and professional army of media professionals. An army that integrates and transcends the valiant efforts of the Israel Project, CAMERA, Z Street, Jerusalem Post Editor David Horovitz, Jerusalem Post columnist and Gaza Flotilla "We Con The World" video hero Caroline Glick and HonestReporting.com.

Just ask yourself one question.
Is Israel's global image better today than it was a year ago?

Our enemies are smart. They don't need tanks and F-16s. All they need is a computer to upload images which will shock you. Images and soundbytes that will make you fear them more than they fear us. To create a consensus to retreat from Gaza for all of the wrong reasons.

We don't need to display the heads of Islamic terrorists to win this war.

What we do need is the immediate, urgent action of Benjamin Netanyahu who like Ariel Sharon has failed to deliver on his promise of creating a professional, effective governmental PR apparatus which would be directly under his control with private, professional, crisis media logistical consultancy support.

To win this PR war we must play by the same rules as our enemy. The Americans in 1776, who were greatly outnumbered, did not walk in open formation when they entered the battlefield. They took cover from behind trees and rocks, ambushed by night and changed the rules of warfare. They were called cowards by the Brits but in the end, the creative "cowards" won the war. The British, who out of collective pride could not adapt, lost.

We don't need to display the heads of Palestinians to win this war. What we do need is the immediate, urgent action of Netanyahu and his chief advisor Ron Dermer to deliver his promise of creating a professional, effective governmental PR apparatus which would be directly under his control with private, professional, crisis media logistical consultancy support.

It is time for Islamic terrorists and the populations which support them to fear us more than we fear them.

The time for Israel's "shock and awe" show has been long overdue.

So I ask the Jewish Agency, with the taxes that we pay, who have you chosen to represent the Jewish people?
What is their professional PR experience? Or is this going to be just another political appointment?
Are they using Facebook, Twitter and YouTube?

And finally, what kind of logistical and creative support will the Jewish Agency provide to this PR professional to get the job done?

Yes. I'm angry because my children live in Israel. I'm angry because my children are in real danger.

I'm angry because the problem is not the Jewish Agency.
The problem is with the Prime Minister's Office which for years has made great declarations for the need to establish a professional task force for Israel's PR. Something they never did. Something for which every Jew around the world suffers for.

Something which directly results in Jewish lives being murdered in that tiny, democratic land called Israel.

Facing trial for taking son home to see grandparents

Christer and Domenic Johansson
The case circumstances of the battle between the Johansson family and Swedish social services agencies are stark:
  • 7-year-old Domenic Johansson in mid-2009 is abducted by social services workers from parents because they were homeschooling.
  • Courts rule state has right to keep custody and even after 18 months, he's allowed to see his mom and dad only about an hour every five to six weeks.
  • Frustrated father sneaks son home for unauthorized visit so he can see grandparents.
  • Father arrested, jailed, facing trial on counts of "interference."
Now an organization that is working in support of the family has posted a plan originating witha blog called FriendsofDomenic for concerned parents, homeschoolers and others around the world to let the Swedish authorities know the case is cause for alarm.
The plan being offered by officials with the Home School Legal Defense Association is for people around the globe to send a polite and direct message to the judge in the case.
(Story continues below)

Both websites, FriendsofDomenic and the HSLDA, are posting a Swedish text with instructions for readers to copy and paste into an e-mail, or onto a postcard, and dispatch it to the judge who is appointed by the government to hear the case of Christer Johansson, Domenic's father.
"As you might have heard or read, Domenic's father, Christer Johansson, is in prison awaiting trial on Dec. 20, 2010. He was arrested after bringing Domenic home after a supervised meeting. These extremely rare meetings of one hour every five weeks, and under close watch of authorities, have been torture for this family, who have suffered unimaginable psychological stress and pressure," says the announcement.
"Imagine only being allowed to see your young child for this limited time over the last 18 months. They have not even been allowed to see Domenic on his birthday and holidays," it continues.
"Christer has also twice been denied his right to choose his own legal representative.
"We really want to bring this issue into focus and show our support for Christer in the upcoming trial on the 20th," the message continues. Because of the high costs of travel to theSwedish island of Gotland, a rally there is unworkable, but the group said, "We would like you, wherever you are in the world, to please print or copy the Swedish text found below and post this as a letter or postcard to the judge who will lead the trial on the 20th."
The name of the judge and his address:
Lagman Mikael Mellqvist
Gotlands tingsratt
Box 1143
SE-62122 Visby
Seden
The blog also suggests e-mails to the judge.
The note says: "I am extremely worried about how the Swedish authorities and courts are treating Christer Johansson and the circumstances of the forceful abduction of his son Domenic by Gotland Social Services. When Christer decided to bring his son home … it was the action of a man who had been driven to desperation. … Christer Johansson is not a criminal, but he has had to endure huge psychological stress and pressure. … I entreat you to please respect Christer Johansson's human rights."

The Alliance Defense Fund, an international public interest law team, is working with the HSLDA on an appeal to the European Court of Human Rights in the family's case.
They explain the situation:
"Despite the ill-advised decision on the part of Mr. Johansson, the only menace here is a government drunk with its own power," said Roger Kiska, legal counsel for the Alliance Defense Fund.

Annie and Domenic Johansson

"No one in Swedish government seems to be paying attention as this system tramples this poor family into the dirt," added Michael Donnelly, with the Home School Legal Defense Association. "It's incredible that after taking Domenic off a plane because he was being homeschooled in June 2009 he is still not home. This is an outrage that all free people should condemn."
The blog report said Christer Johansson was having a brief, once-every-five-weeks visit with his son, Domenic, now 9, when he decided to leave the state-supervised location and take Domenic home with him.
"Christer had no apparent motive other than to have more time with his son and to allow Dominic's grandparents, who had not seen their grandson in nearly a year-and-a-half, a chance to see their grandchild," the report said.
Two days later, on Wednesday before Thanksgiving, Johansson notified authorities he and his son were both at home, and police officers in several police units swooped down on the residential neighborhood, taking custody of Domenic again without even allowing him time to put on a coat in the frigid Swedish winter, the report said.
Domenic has been in custody since mid-2009 because his parents were homeschooling him. He was "state-napped" by police who on social workers' instructions raided a jet about to depart for India and forcibly took Domenic into custody. The Johanssons were in the process of moving to India, Domenic's mother's home country, at the time.
WND reported this fall that a judge in Sweden's administrative court ruled social workers will continue to have custody of Domenic. The boy was seized from his parents June 25, 2009, because he was being homeschooled, had a few untreated cavities in his teeth and had not been given the latest vaccinations scheduled by the government.
Since then, he's been allowed brief visits with his parents, sometimes five weeks apart, and at other times a brief – monitored – telephone call.
"The government shouldn’t abduct and imprison children simply because it doesn't like homeschooling. That's exactly what happened here," said Kiska. "This sad circumstance is what happens when an over-powerful government pushes a parent to the point of desperation, so social services should not pretend to be surprised. The parents complied with everything expected of them, and yet the government continued to keep their son under lock and key.
"Americans beware: This is coming to your doorstep if you are not vigilant about your government," he warned.
According to a website that supports the Johansson family, the head of Sweden's Department of Children and Education, Lena Celion, wrote that it was "for the boy's sake" that agents forcibly and without a warrant took him from his family, placed him with a foster family and enrolled him in a government school.
Gustaf Hofstedt, president of the local social services board, has told WND by telephone from Sweden that there is more to the dispute than homeschooling, but he refused to explain.
"I understand the public debate has been that is a case that is only concerning the fact of homeschooling," he told WND. "But that is not the case."
Asked to explain, he said, "I can't answer that question because of secrecy."

AIPAC Applauds US House Resolution Calling For Negotiated Settlement To Israel Palestine Conflict

AIPAC Applauds US House Resolution Calling For Negotiated Settlement To
Israel Palestine Conflict

Jerusalem, Israel ---- December 16, 2010 ...... The following was partly communicated by AIPAC to the Israel News Agency.

The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) supported yesterday’s passage of a US House resolution supporting a negotiated settlement to the Israel Palestine conflict, while discouraging efforts to circumvent that process.

"The resolution passed by voice vote," said a written statement by AIPAC. "AIPAC supports the House’s call for a negotiated solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and its strong opposition to efforts to seek recognition of a Palestinian state outside of an Israeli-Palestinian agreement."
AIPAC quoted US President Barack Obama saying:“The only path to lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians is direct talks.”

"Unfortunately, it has been three months since Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas has been willing to sit down, face-to-face with his Israel counterpart," said the AIPAC statement. "Israel has proven it is prepared to make significant sacrifices for a real
peace with its neighbors. But such an accord can only be reached through sustained and direct talks."

AIPAC added: "We join the US House in support of the Obama Administration’s opposition to a unilateral declaration of a Palestinian state and join it in calling on the US Administration to persuade other nations to oppose such a declaration. AIPAC commends the leadership of the sponsors of the resolution: House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Howard Berman (D-CA), Reps. Ted Poe (R-TX), Shelley Berkley (DNV), Ranking Member Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Gary Ackerman (D-NY) and Dan Burton (R-IN)."

For more than half a century, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee has worked to help make Israel more secure by ensuring that American support remains strong. From a small pro-Israel public affairs boutique in the 1950s, AIPAC has grown into a 100,000-member national grassroots movement described by The New York Times as "the most important organization affecting America's relationship with Israel."

The core of AIPAC's mission is building a base of citizen advocates who team with AIPAC's professional staff to educate America's elected officials, policy makers and opinion leaders.
AIPAC is registered as a domestic lobby and supported financially by private donations.

The organization receives no financial assistance from Israel, from any national organization or any foreign group. AIPAC is not a political action committee. It does not rate, endorse or contribute to candidates.
