Israel Defense Forces Humanitarian Medical, Aid Delegation Leaves For Japan

Israel Flying Aid providing medical treatment to children in Haiti.
Israel is now on her way to save children in Japan.

Jerusalem, Israel ---- March 25, 2011 ..... Israel's warm, caring, brave humanitarian heart is again at work as the Israel Defense Forces Home Front Command and IDF Medical Corps delegation with over 50 soldiers are prepared to depart Israel for the Miyagi district in Japan on Saturday, March 26th 2011, at 11 pm..

The IDF delegation will consist of around fifty soldiers and officers including logistics teams, Israel experts in the field of population management, Japanese translators, experts from the Israel Committee of Atomic Energy, fourteen Jewish doctors specializing in different fields, seven nurses and nine paramedics.

The Israel Defense Forces teams will assist Japan’s rehabilitation efforts by providing various medical services and establishing a medical center manned by the IDF Home Front Command and IDF Medical Corps specialists.

Heading the IDF delegation is the Commander of the IDF Home Front Command Search and Rescue Unit, Brig. Gen. (Res.) Shalom Ben-Arieh. Heading the delegation’s medical team is deputy to the Chief Medical Officer, Col. Dr. Ofir Cohen-Marom.

This IDF delegation joins the initial team of three officers who left for Japan on Saturday, March 19, and prepared the framework for this larger IDF delegation by informing them of the current situation and coordinating their arrival.

Last night, an Israel plane carrying over 36 tons of medical equipment left Ben Gurion Airport for Japan. Overall, the IDF delegation will carry over 60 tons of medical aid and equipment. The Israel Defense Ministry will be sending another 20 tons of equipment to residents in Japan left homeless in the disaster – including tents, coats, hats, gloves, blankets and portable toilets valued at millions of shekels.

The Israel Defense Forces team will travel 350 kilometers (217 miles) north to the ruins of the coastal town which lost half its residents, 8,000 people, to the massive waves. The survivors have been left with no roof over their heads, shelter or aid.

Among the IDF career and reserve soldiers who have volunteered for this mission are doctors from a number of specialties including urology, orthopedics, surgeons, gynecology, pediatrics and general practitioners.

The IDF will be joining members of IsraAid and ZAKA who are already on the ground in Japan.
Israel is well known and respected for it humanitarian aid missions in 2010 to Haiti where the IDF was the first to establish an advanced field hospital.

The IDF medical and rescue team which was sent to Haiti consisted of a delegation of 236 members, including 218 IDF soldiers and officers and 18 civilians. The Israel Defense Forces delegation left 30 tons of medical equipment for use in the ongoing aid effort. This included bandaging gear, surgery equipment, two incubators and other medical accessories as well as 1150 blankets, 30 large-sized tents, 500 mattresses, 200 sleeping bags and kitchen equipment. The equipment was distributed to tent-cities in different locations in Haiti, under the coordination of the Israel ambassador in the country.

The delegation held a ceremony to mark the closing of the field hospital set up in Haiti. Col. Itzik Kryce, commander of the field hospital, conveyed his great appreciation to the medical staff saying: “You were a drop of hope in a sea of desperation and sometimes made the difference between life and death. It is a great privilege, and you’ve done it as human beings, following the spirit of the IDF and in accordance with the values of the IDF Medical Corps.”

"Right now we are set to remain in Japan for a few weeks but we will continue to stay there for as long as we're needed, even if it means replacing the first force with a new force," said deputy chief of the delegation and Israel Defense Forces Chief Medical Officer Col. Dr. Ophir Cohen-Marom.

Cohen-Marom added: "We will act as an essential medical anchor, just like Israel knows to offer. It needs to be understood that Japan is a very advanced country and is recovering nicely, but we will study their needs and offer aid as required. To the best of my knowledge, we are the first organized delegation leaving for Japan following their refusal of other offers."

As for the fears of absorbing active radiation, Dr. Marom-Cohen said that the delegation is well prepared: "We will have a doctor that specializes in radiation on the team and each member of the delegation will be carrying a personal actinometer to measure radiation, in addition to up-to-date sketches with the region's radiation levels.

"In any case, we are ready to evacuate immediately if the radiation reaches dangerous levels, and any patients we identify to be suffering from radiation will be evacuated to specialized hospitals."

Israel Fathers Take Gender Bias Discrimination in Family Courts, Child Welfare to Supreme Court

Israel Fathers Take Gender Bias Discrimination in Family Courts, Child Welfare to Supreme Court

By Joel Leyden
Israel News Agency

Jerusalem, Israel ---- March 22, 2011 ..... Fathers for Justice and Equal Access in Israel have issued a news release on the nightmare of men in Israel, who are denied visitation rights with their children. But this news release is far different from any which have been written before.
The subject of Israel fathers being automatically denied access to their children based on lies and false statements of an ex wife is now subject to Israel Supreme Court review.

A Petition to the Israeli High Court of Justice in Jerusalem was launched against the Israel Ministry of Welfare and Social Services on March 15, 2011 by a father who has not seen his child in two years, which seeks to enjoin Moshe Kachlon, the Israel Minister of Welfare and Social services from practicing gender bias discriminatory policies designed to disengage fathers from their children.
According to the Petition to Israel's highest court, a minor v. Moshe Kachlon, Israel Minister of Welfare and Social Services (Bagatz 2111/11), the Family Courts in Israel have completely divested themselves from any judicial role in areas of custody and children visitation rights, and instead of conducting trials, they callously appoint a social services employee, as Court-aides to determine whether a father may be granted rights of visitations to the children.

According to Petitioner whose name and location have been changed to abide by gag orders which protect secret family court sessions from the public, the social workers in the local city or town's child welfare department automatically sends non-custodian fathers to supervised contact centers, where the fathers are allowed one hour a week.

"I am a single man in my thirties," said Ron who lives in Haifa. I met this girl who I had sexual relations with under her story that she was sterile and could not conceive any children. A few months later she contacted me and informed me that she was pregnant. I had been targeted. She could have gone to a sperm bank, but chose me instead. I was devastated."
Ron continues: "Even though I did not want nor was ready to have a child, I decided that I would be a good father and as such take up a supporting role for this baby. Instead, I quickly discovered that she was interested in only two things - having her own child and having me pay for it. I as a father who wanted to visit, play, teach and protect this child was not part of the equation."

Ron, who normally works as a food and beverage consultant is now unemployed as a result of this case. He has spend almost every waking hour trying to gain legal access to his child. Ron, who may soon be entering the Israel Defense Forces for reserve service, is presently being supported financially and emotionally by his older brother.

"I have read nightmare stories about women who make millions of dollars in Israel and have used their husbands as sperm banks. Shortly after having children they file for divorce. They selfishly now have both money and a child - the husband and or partner becomes irrelevant," says Ron. "Most fathers in Israel are living just above the poverty line and many cannot afford to pay the full child support. These women with good jobs and some with illegal jobs working in the prostitution industry will then use lack of payment of child support to keep the men away or have them arrested and placed in debtors prison."

"One woman in Ra'anana, Israel went as far as hiring two private detectives to beat up her ex husband and created so much stress that he wound up in hospital with heart problems. Her goal was to kill this father or force him to leave the country. The family courts take no responsibility as they defer the cases to child welfare and and child welfare does nothing stating that only the family court can make decisions. We are placing our trust in the Israel Supreme Court to see through this negligence and stop the suffering of dads who wish to be with their children and can't because they are discriminated upon as men. Women, even if they are mentally ill, drug abusers or even prostitutes are automatically given custody of children in divorce. The father may be a high ranking officer in the IDF, the police or even the Mossad risking their lives for the community on a daily basis but they are denied custody. They can carry an M-16, but they can't carry their own children."

The petition to the Israel Supreme Court alleges that the waiting list in the child welfare social workers caseload may take 6 to 9 months during which no access or visitation rights are allowed to these caring fathers. Once the social worker starts working on the case, “all hell breaks loose”.

The social workers humiliate the fathers, collect tidbits of libel and defamation and places them in writing, instigate the mothers and motivate them to file false domestic violence claims in order to rule out any option of joint custody, and it is alleged that the social workers in general who are female and are biased against men, and are systematically indoctrinated into an anti-male climate of “feminist Jihad proportions” against men.

"In Israel, the lethal weapon of choice are false allegations of child abuse," says Ron. "Just the unproved allegation in itself is enough to keep the father away from his children and restrict him to Mercaz Kesher or state supervised visitation center. These fathers are treated like common criminals. The only way they can regain their basic human rights as a father is to go to a forensic psychologist who can interview them and clear their name. But the cost of this process is in the thousands of dollars and most men cannot afford to pay for this evaluation. We are asking the state to take responsibility for these evaluations as done in many other countries around the world. Family courts and child welfare should not pass judgment on a loving and caring father without being able to document whether he is fit or not!"
The Supreme Court Petition seeks to declare the policy of automatic referrals of fathers to a supervised “contact center” unconstitutional. It is claimed that Israel is a signatory to international treaties whereby the State guarantees protection of the right to family life, but in reality, the right to family life is not interpreted in Israel in the same way it is interpreted by other Western nations.

In Europe, for example, the right to family life is interpreted to include parental rights to access to the children without institutionalized intervention or with minimal intervention by the State. Israel, on the other hand, still does not recognize a parental right to access to the children, and thus fathers are relegated to the task of convincing the social workers that it is the best interest of the child that he sees the father, as a matter of judicial grace, and not as a matter of a natural indelible right.

It is stated in the Supreme Court Petition that it is enough for the custodian mother to refuse visitation rights to trigger the automatic and cold referral to supervised visitations and that in the process; social workers subject fathers to an illegal “Dangerous Propensities Test”, which is so nonscientific and wholly subjective, no man can pass the test without being branded as “dangerous”.

Israel social workers from Tel Aviv, Haifa and Jerusalem to Herzlia, Eilat and Tiberius are instructed to grade fathers between 0 to 36 point, when 10 points yields a level of “dangerous Propensity”.

These highly subjective points, which are not under the supervision of a psychiatrist or physiologist, can simply accumulate depending on the theatrical degree of the complaining woman, and biased level of the social worker, on subjective questions such as: extreme jealousy (2 points), extreme possessiveness (2 points), the attacker experiences severe loss (3 points), the attacker in the absence of alternative to loss (1 pt), obsessive preoccupation with the woman (2 points), woman is determined to make a change (1 points), woman feels she is in danger (3 points), woman unable to defend herself (2 pts.).

“It is sufficient to score high on these eight questions to produce a score of 16 points, and with little drama, theatrical sense and legal coaching, any woman can easily convince the social worker from Holon or Hadera to give high scores on these factors, and the man is immediately branded as “dangerous”, and loses his right to see or access his children. No man in any Western nation is subjected to this kind of degrading and humiliating treatment when seeking to see his children, except in Israel”, says the Petitioner.

In addition, fathers in Israel claim that social workers compel them to undergo psycho-therapeutic sessions, without their consent, as a condition to approving his right to see the child, and then they use the information extracted from the father to paint him negatively in the court, simply because the woman announced that ideologically the child does not need to grow up with a father figure.

"The single mothers can go as far as "buying" other single mothers to come to court and make additional false accusations against the victimized father," says Ron. "The defense would be the intervention of a forensic psychologist to prove these allegation false and the Supreme Court implementing measures to ensure that gender bias discrimination is erased from the family courts and child welfare."

Respected journalist, Laurie Shem Tov, states that social workers in Israel created an autonomous system that denies parents’ real access to Courts and is totally immune from judicial scrutiny.

“They set new rules that contradict the laws of equality and modern disciplines of social work”. The solutions offered are radical and extreme: men are sent to supervised contact centers, and women who do not play by the rules find their children kidnapped to foster care, based solely on "impressions", "feelings", "intuitions" and "future risk probabilities" that have no scientific or legally probative value. “The social services system in Israel is a corrupt and malicious system based on intoxicated power egos and systematic feeding of business to social workers, foster home operators, and “parental suitability” test institutions, while the children are routinely disconnected from loving parents and this is all cloaked under “best interest of the child” slogans.

Fathers 4 Justice Israel says that the struggle of fathers to recognition of their basic human rights to undisrupted visitation rights with their children has also reached the Knesset (Parliament). Member of Knesset Yulia Shamalov-Berkovich has started a forum against feministic Jihad seeking to restore the balance of power and fair play between the sexes. The recent Petition to the Supreme Court has been inspired by the momentum created by Shamalov-Berkovich. The minor and his father are represented by attorney Chaim Arbel of Tel Aviv and assisted by Tamar Tesler of Haifa.

"At the end of the day, it is the child which suffers from lack of contact with a father role model resulting in Parental Alienation Syndrome (PAS)," says Ron. "These children usually end up visiting psychologists for a variety of personality disorders and have trouble adjusting to life as adults. This cruel and systematic terrorism of fathers and their children in Israel must stop."

Massacre of Jewish Babies, Children in Israel Lacks Condemnation As Netanyahu Demands UN Action

Massacre of Jewish Babies, Children in Israel Lacks Condemnation As Netanyahu Demands UN Action

Jerusalem, Israel ---- March 12, 2011 ..... Part of the following was communicated by the Israel Government Press Office to the Israel News Agency.

As many in Israel shed a tear, they shake their heads and question: "how can an animal stab a 4-month-old baby to death"?

Most of the world's nations remain quiet, few condemnations have come forth as Islamic Gaza residents from the southern city of Rafah have poured out onto the streets to celebrate the terror attack in West Bank town of Itamar, in which five family members were murdered in their sleep. These "democratic" and "peace loving" nations are quick to grab headlines in criticizing the natural growth of cities and towns in the West Bank - Judea and Samaria - but when it comes to the innocent blood of Jewish children, they are nowhere to be seen.

Arab oil over democracy and basic human rights?

Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated this evening: "I would like to express my deep outrage, outrage which is certainly felt by every Israeli over the murder of a young family – father, mother, eleven-year-old boy, four-year-old-boy and four-month-old girl."

"Three orphaned children have been left in this family. One of the girls saw her parents and siblings stabbed to death. The family was brutally murdered in their sleep on the Sabbath. We embrace and support the orphans and the other members of the family. We embrace and support our brothers who reside in Judea and Samaria. Do not be disheartened. I know that this is a difficult time for us, but the entire nation is with you. Since the disaster, this awful murder, became known I have held discussions with Defense Minister Ehud Barak, Israel Defense Forces Chief-of-Staff, Lt.-Gen. Benny Gantz, ISA Director Yuval Diskin and other senior security officials. I instructed them to make every effort to find the murderers and not to rest until they have been found and brought to justice."

Netanyahu added: "I expect the international community to sharply and unequivocally condemn this murder, the murder of children. I have noticed that several countries that always hasten to the UN Security Council in order to condemn Israel, the state of the Jews, for planning a house in some locality, or for laying some tiles somewhere have been dilatory in sharply condemning the murder of Jewish infants. I expect them to issue such condemnations immediately, without balances, without understandings, without justifications. There is no justification and there can be neither excuse nor forgiveness for the murder of children. I expect a similar condemnation, and I demand a similar condemnation, from the Palestinian Authority. I am disappointed by the weak and mumbled statements. This is not how one condemns terrorism. This is not how one fights terrorism. See how Israeli prime ministers, myself among them, have reacted in similar situations, but there has never been anything like this, in which terrorists entered a home and cut children's throats."

"This requires sharp and unequivocal condemnation. This requires something else. This requires a halt to the incitement. I demand that the Palestinian Authority stop the incitement that is conducted on a daily basis in their schools, mosques and the media under their control. The time has come to stop this double-talk in which the Palestinian Authority outwardly talks peace, and allows – and sometimes leads – incitement at home. The time has come to stop the incitement and begin educating their people for peace."

Israel's Prime Minister concluded: "Despite all the awful pain, I call upon all Israelis to act responsibly, with restraint, and not to take the law into their own hands. When one takes the law into his own hands, there is no law. The IDF and the security forces will carry out their responsibilities; only they. We will not allow terrorism to determine the settlement map. The settlement map will be determined by Government policy, which is in accordance with our national interests, with security first and foremost. Terrorism will not determine the settlement map. We will determine it."

Udi Fogel, 36, his wife Ruth, 35, and their children Yoav, 11, Elad, 4 and Hadas, 3 months were all stabbed to death. The funeral for the five members of the Fogel family, murdered in a terror attack in the West Bank town of Itamar on Friday night is scheduled to take place in Jerusalem on Sunday.

New Zealand Accepts Emergency Earthquake Aid from Israel

New Zealand Accepts Emergency Earthquake Aid from IsraelBookmark and Share

Israel is sending sanitation, water purification equipment and temporary shelters to the earthquake-ravaged city of Christchurch. This nearly a week after Israel first offered aid to Christchurch.
Last night, New Zealand Prime Minister John Key formally asked Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu for help. Key turned to Israel for assistance as health and sanitation problems continue to develop in the South Island city.
Israel is well-known for the relief delegations it sends to help victims of manmade and natural disasters around the world.
Rescue teams from New Zealand continue to scour ruined buildings hit by last Tuesday's 6.3 tremor. And though New Zealand has asked for Israeli sanitation aid, it continues to deny Israel's world renowned search and rescue teams to help look for survivors.
The Israeli Foreign Ministry said that as of February 26, there are still six Israeli citizens who are known to have been traveling in New Zealand at the time of the earthquake, but whose whereabouts are still unknown. Foreign Ministry officials also confirmed that an Israeli backpacker was killed in the quake.
New Zealand Prime Minister Key said the high number of foreigners killed in the tremor meant Christchurch's pain was being felt around the world. "This isn't just New Zealand's tragedy, the February 22 earthquake affected countless people internationally," he said.

Investors, Angels, High Tech Investment Capital Sought for iSiT Software - Google, IBM Ranked First Place Startup

Investors, Angels, High Tech Investment Capital Sought for iSiT Software - Google, IBM Ranked First Place Startup

By Helen Katzman
Israel News Agency

Tel Aviv , Israel ---- February 15, 2011 ...... Say you're reading a news or feature article on the Internet from Google News, The New York Times, AP, Reuters, Wikipedia or a Blog regarding a hard to believe, a new state-of-the art mobile phone that just seems too good to be true. Maybe you just read reports about violent riots in Egypt, Yemen or Iran or perhaps a news story about a raging forest fire in California or natural disaster that's occurring in some corner of the world. You saw a headline about the financial insolvency of another Europe country or the closing of your local bank. You say to yourself, "Is it a fact? Is it true?"

The iSiT online, fact checking software application is being developed so that people can verify the credibility of online information in real time.

This highly creative startup idea was judged as the first place winner by Google, IBM and Sun Microsystems at a Startup Weekend Israel competition.

During 2010 the original team of founders reorganized themselves into a company called Isit Ltd., brought in some new key people, posted its Website at www.isitfact.com and wrote a comprehensive business plan and product roadmap to attract investment capital.

Today large amounts of information found on the Internet are often subjective, reported with a bias or with intent to distort or misrepresent facts. Almost anyone can post a blog online or publish information on such sites as Wikipedia.

"People have rightfully become highly skeptical of what they read online and what information they can rely upon," says David Marcus, CEO of Isit Ltd.

"Online information has become the lifeblood of our work, investments, finance, business, trade, leisure, entertainment, friendships and families. iSiT? will be used by millions of people that need to quickly check the credibility of general news, finance, political, sports and entertainment and pass it on to their social networks including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube. Currently there is no professional, quick and reliable method by which a person can verify the credibility of information online in real time. The award winning iSiT Internet fact checking software application fills this gap."

iSiT is a Web 2.0, Web 3.0 software application based on deep knowledge of data base integration, a clever application of journalistic principles and its integration with SEO algorithms. Because iSiT is a computer generated service which takes into account changing reliability factors, the most reliable news sources and massive amounts of data there is no need to wait for the human response and no need to deal with human subjectivity which might lead to error. A provisional patent has been filed on the software application.

"The iSiT software will provide its users with 'credibility in a click' ", said Joel Leyden, Isit Senior VP of Marketing.

"We envision three target Internet markets for generation of revenues: the PC market, the corporate B2B market and the B2C smart phone application market. In addition, advertising and licensing opportunities will be aggressively pursued."

"We are seeking immediate investment for this Google and IBM judged award winning software application," says Marcus.

"We are speaking with a select number of VC, Angels, private investors and capital groups from New York, South Korea, Israel and the UK to France, Germany, Japan and China and want to widen the number of interested parties and potential partners. When potential investors such as Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, AOL, Facebook, HP, SONY, Apple, ARC Angle Fund, Trident Capital, BlackRock, The Blackstone Group, Barclays Global Investors N.A., Lehman Brothers - Wealth and Asset Management Division, Osage Partners, Goldman Sachs, and others whose investments are listed on NYSE, NASDAQ and AMEX equity markets are seeking creative Internet, new media, social media, Web 3.0 software applications that could enhance their ROI they become more than eager to share coffee with us," says Leyden.
.
Leyden, an Internet pioneer who co-created the first Website in Israel and serves as a social networking and new media consultant to hundreds of global organizations including two governments, says that those industries which would benefit from IsIt Software would be financial and brokerage firms, news, information, database and editorial distribution services, security, intelligence INTEL agencies, academic institutions and political parties.

"We have a winner. We just want to make sure that the baby is born and developed in the most effective, practical and timely manner."

Israel Cabinet Approves Gantz As IDF Chief of Staff, Welcomes Egypt Military Pledge to Honor Peace Treaties

Israel Cabinet Approves Gantz As IDF Chief of Staff, Welcomes Egypt Military Pledge to Honor Peace Treaties

By Israel News Agency Staff

Jerusalem, Israel ---- February 13, 2011 ...... Part of the following was communicated by the Israel Cabinet Secretariat to the Israel News Agency.
At the weekly Israel Cabinet meeting held in Jerusalem today Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made the following remarks:
"Today, we will submit for Cabinet approval the appointment of IDF Maj.-Gen. Benny Gantz as the next Chief-of-Staff of the State of Israel. He is an outstanding officer and an experienced commander. Maj.-Gen. Gantz has considerable operational and organizational experience. He has all the necessary qualities to be an outstanding commander of the IDF. This appointment will enhance the stability of the IDF, which is always important, but is especially important at this time of deep shocks in our region."
Netanyahu added: "I would like to take this opportunity to thank Lt.-Gen. Gaby Ashkenazi, who is concluding his outstanding term as Chief-of-Staff. We congratulate him on his achievements and wish him success in the future."
In regards to the situation in Egypt, Netanyahu said: "Egypt President Hosni Mubarak resigned over the weekend and left Cairo. The Government of Israel welcomes the Egyptian military statement that Egypt will continue to honor its peace agreement with Israel. The peace agreement with Israel has stood for many years. During this period, all Egyptian governments have upheld and advanced it and we believe that it is the cornerstone of peace and stability, not only between the two countries, but in the entire Middle East as well."

Pursuant to Article 3(c) of Israel Basic Law: the IDF and in accordance with the recommendation of Israel Defense Minister Ehud Barak, the Israel Cabinet decided to appoint Maj.-Gen. Binyamin (Benny) Gantz as the Chief-of-Staff of the Israel Defense Forces, effective tomorrow Monday, 14.2.11.

Lt.-Gen. Gaby Ashkenazi will conclude his term as IDF Chief-of-Staff upon Maj.-Gen. Gantz's entry into office.
The IDF Chief-of-Staff serves for three years. In special circumstances, the Israel Cabinet is entitled to extend the term for an additional period, not to exceed one year.

The Israel Cabinet approved a comprehensive multi-year (2011-2014), approximately NIS 680 million plan to strengthen Druze and Circassian communities.

Israel Science and Technology Minister Prof. Daniel Hershkowitz and Science and Technology Ministry Director-General Menachem Greenbloom briefed the Israel Cabinet on the activities of the Ministry in 2010-2011.

Lt.-Gen. Gaby Ashkenazi grew up in Hagor, a moshav, or cooperative agricultural community in the Sharon region of central Israel. Ashkenazi completed high school at a military boarding school affiliated with the prestigious Gymnasia Herzliya in Tel Aviv. His roommates included Yigal Schwartz, a major figure in Israeli literature, and Yoav Toker, a Paris-based broadcast journalist.

Ashkenazi was drafted into Israel's Golani Brigade in 1972, Ashkenazi first saw action in the Sinai Peninsula during the 1973 Yom Kippur War. In July 1976 Ashkenazi was a platoon commander in the force that carried out Operation Thunderbolt, a mission to rescue hostages held in Uganda.] Ashkenazi's first of many experiences in Lebanon came in 1978 during Operation Litani. Ashkenazi was wounded in the fighting and left the IDF before being asked to return as a battalion commander two years later.

During the 1982 Lebanon War, Ashkenazi served as IDF Deputy Commander of the Golani Brigade and commanded the forces which captured Beaufort Castle, and the towns of Nabatieh and Jabel Baruch. Promoted to Commander of the Golani in 1987, Ashkenazi was reportedly popular with his brigade's combat soldiers during his nearly two-year tenure in that post.

In 1988, Ashkenazi was appointed head of Intelligence for Israel Northern Command. He commanded a reserve armor division in the early 1990s and later worked as the chief of Israel's civil administration in Lebanon, and in 1994 was promoted to chief of the General Staff's Operations Directorate. In 1998, Ashkenazi was appointed head of the Israeli Northern Command, a position that would make him responsible for Israel's withdrawal from its Security Zone in Southern Lebanon, ending Israel's 18 year presence in the country. Ashkenazi criticized the withdrawal, believing that it should have been accompanied by negotiations with Syria.

Israel Defense Minister Amir Peretz brought Ashkenazi back to the military to serve as the Ministry of Defense's Director-General. In this position, Ashkenazi became the relatively inexperienced Minister's "right hand man" during the 2006 Israel-Lebanon conflict and, according to Ynetnews, proved to be "much more proficient" than his boss.

Ynetnews attributes Peretz's decision to promote Ashkenazi to Chief of Staff to the two men's successful working relationship during the Lebanon war.

Ashkenazi became the Chief of the General Staff of the Israel Defense Forces on 14 February 2007.

At the end of February 2008, Ashkenazi commanded Operation Hot Winter during which the IDF fought terrorist organizations in Gaza for two days. The fighting ended in an truce agreement between Israel and Hamas. At the end of 2008 and in early 2009 Ashkenazi commanded also Operation Cast Lead during which the IDF fought again against the terrorist organizations in Gaza, headed by the Hamas. In the eyes of many Israelis and military commentators, IDF conduct in the operation, which resulted in a hard blow to Hamas (including at least 700 Hamas operatives dead, but also a large number of civilian deaths) and a very low number of Israeli casualties, proved that the IDF has learned the lessons from the Second Lebanon War and regained its reputation and deterrence against Israel's enemies.

Ashkenazi studied at the Tel Aviv Junior Command Preparatory School and the U.S. Marine Corps University's Command and Staff College. He also holds a B.A. in political science from the University of Haifa and is a graduate of a Harvard Business School program in management for senior executives.

Gabi Ashkenazi's brother, Brigadier General Avi Ashkenazi, was appointed head of the IDF's Staff and Command School in September, 2006.

The new IDF Chief of Staff Rav Aluf Benjamin "Benny" Gantz was born 1959 in Kfar Ahim is a general in the Israel Defense Forces and former Deputy Chief of the General Staff. Following the canceled appointment of previous nominee Aluf Yoav Galant, Israel Defense Minister Rav Aluf (ret.) Ehud Barak announced on 5 February 2011 that he will be recommending to the government that Gantz be appointed the 20th Chief of the General Staff (after the approval by the Turkel Advisory Committee on Senior Appointments and the vote of the government). On 13 February 2011 after a government meeting, the Israel government unanimously approved Gantz appointment to be the 20th IDF chief of staff.

Born in Israel, Gantz was drafted into the IDF in 1977. He volunteered as a paratrooper in the Paratroopers Brigade, and in 1979 became an officer after completing officer's training school. During his career Gantz has served in a number of different roles, including: Commander of the elite Shaldag Unit in the Israel Air Force, Commander of the Paratrooper Brigade, Commander of the Reserves Division in the Northern Command, Commander of the Lebanon Liaison Unit, Commander of the Judea and Samaria Division in 2000, before becoming the Commander of the Israel Northern Command in 2001, and as Israel's military attaché in the US from 2005 until 2009 before reaching his current position.

General Gantz has received a number of degrees during his military service. He is a graduate of the IDF Command and Headquarters College and the National Security College. He holds a Bachelor's Degree in History from Tel Aviv University, a Master's Degree in Political Science from the University of Haifa, and an additional Master's Degree in National Resources Management from the National Defense University in the United States.

The Israel News Agency sincerely thanks IDF Lt.-Gen. Gaby Ashkenazi for providing dedicated and successful service to the IDF which serves as an inspiration for all who follow in his foot steps and wishes IDF General Gantz the very best of success in his new position. May General Gantz go from strength to strength.

Jerusalem, Israel ---- February 12, 2011 ...... Two peoples who share a very common historic and cultural past. Both Semitic from the desert who embrace family values, houmus, the same wind, sun and languages that begin from right to left.

Today at peace with a stable, growing trade and mutual interests in security and tourism.
But are the people from Israel and Egypt so alike?

From what one hears from our governments, the answer appears to be yes. But if you talk to the man on the street in Cairo, the answer might be somewhat different.

Now that Mubarak has resigned and the revolution for democracy is now taking hold, one must wonder what kind of new government will be formed.

Will it oppose or support Hamas, the Muslim Brotherhood, Iran and Islamic Jihad?

Will this new democracy allow itself to be hijacked by the Muslim Brotherhood who have declared that "democracy is bad for Egypt" and create a new and hostile threat to Israel, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Europe and the US?

Anti-Semitism has been rampant in Egypt for ages. And even though former Egypt President Hosni Mubarak was a friend of Israel, he too suffered from that anti-Semitism as those who despise democracy and freedom would characterize Mubarak as a Jew in the worst manner. But even he and his colleagues did nothing to address it.

News stories and caricatures in the Egypt media have regularly featured anti-Semitic depictions of Jews as stooped, hook-nosed, money-hungry and conspiratorial. Israel leaders are illustrated as Nazis, while other articles deny or diminish the Holocaust. Anti Israel and anti Jewish conspiracy theories frequently surface, including references to the Protocols of the Elders of Zion and modern reincarnations of the medieval blood-libel charge.

What Israel has is a cold peace with Egypt. This cold peace appears to remain in effect as the Egypt military has declared that they will honor the peace treaties. But what about the people of Egypt?

Those who have read that Israelis drink the blood of Palestinian babies and hate each and every Egyptian.

Israel is now faced with an image, PR challenge that it has never had to truly address with Egypt until now.

In the last few hours I and others from Israel have written in Arabic that the people of Israel wish the Egyptian people long life, peace and democracy. Many of these remarks have been met with hateful responses. That we, the Jews are lying and that the Jews of Israel are nothing less than lambs in the clothing of wolves.

If we truly want a real democracy to take hold in Egypt, we must look beyond statements coming from the Benjamin Netanyahu and the Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs. If we truly want a democracy to develop and grow in Egypt with a warm peace between Egypt and Israel the responsibility should not remain solely on the shoulders of the Mossad, CIA, NSA, the US State Department and the English and France Ministries of Foreign Affairs.

For as it has been said, a peace between peoples is far more potent than a peace between governments.

There has never been a more sensitive time for the survival of Israel than today.

We need not a hostile threat coming from the south, nor does the IDF need a new front to mobilize upon.

Israel needs a peoples PR campaign aimed and targeted towards the good people of Egypt. We need to take to Facebook, Twitter and YouTube and let the Egyptian hear directly from us that we are not their enemies. That we share similar goals and values. That our past, our present and future historical, cultural and political ties should be determined by all we have in common - not by any differences that can be exploited by Jihadists who wish to destroy any healthy relationship.

The Israel News Agency asks of every Israeli, of every Jew to change their profile picture in the Facebook and Twitter to that of the Egypt and Israel flags as seen in this news story. To join every Egypt room on Facebook, every thread on Twitter and using Google Translate to state in their native Arab language that Israel wishes the people of Egypt only long life, peace, democracy and prosperity.

That Israel has been a good friend for the last three decades and wishes to be even a better friend with greater trade and tourism between these two great nations.

Since the establishment of peace between Israel and Egypt, the two countries have developed trade relations in a number of realms, such as textiles, machinery, chemicals, vegetables and cotton. The peace treaty clearly specifies that Israel will purchase Egyptian oil on a regular basis.

Since the establishment of relations, there is tourism between the Israel and Egypt, with the Sinai Peninsula a popular site for Israeli visitors - especially in the summer months. The flow of Egyptian and foreign tourists to Israel from Egypt has steadily been growing.

There will be those who will say let the Egyptians say something nice first. To these people, I can only respond by saying that we must view Egyptian mentality as having been somewhat crippled, brainwashed by anti-Semitic propaganda. We must take the first step by openly declaring on Facebook and Twitter our admiration for Egypt, for their rich history, their culture and our condolences for those who died for democracy.

We must invite them to visit Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and Haifa. We must create inexpensive tourism packages and warmly greet them at the airport.

We must communicate that we are human beings whose only agenda is to live side by side in a real and lasting peace for which our children and our children's children shall enjoy and prosper from.
