As the hours pass, the current recession starts to take on a dark, personal face.
People and companies that we know are being affected.
Many report that we are facing a depressing doomsday scenario - something reminiscent of the "Great Depression" of the 1930's.
But the fact is that tomorrow will come. The sun will rise and people will continue to work.
As a herd of homo sapiens, we are self inflicting this credit crunch recession by responding to fear.
As we fear more, we spend less - and that's the rub.
What we need to do is spend!
Governments are aware of this as they print up more money to kick-start domestic and global economies. But beyond governments, is there anything else we can do?
Yes. Invest!
Investing sounds like a bad word right now. But actually it is both a personal and social cure to all that ails us today.
Here is a list of solid investments - they cannot falter.
After all we will all still need electricity to keep us warm, telephone and Internet to communicate and food to keep us alive.
- Buy long-term Treasury bonds - governments cannot waiver on this.
- Stay defensive with consumer staples stocks - these are as constant as the sun, moon and sea. Toilet paper and home entertainment companies look good.
- Stick with health-care stocks - no one cares to get sick or stay in pain.
- Connect with utilities and telecom stocks - we will all need to complain to somebody.
- Internet marketing / SEO advertising companies - the cost is minimal compared to expensive print and broadcast advertising.
- Anything which is sex related. It's the cheapest drug to escape the bad news.
- Alcohol - the next cheapest drug.
- Casinos - we all hope to get rich quick.
- Defense manufacturers - as the recession takes hold national security feels a chill. The nation always needs to be protected.
- Valium and sleeping pills - since we don't know what will be tomorrow, we do know that we need to sleep!
These two human characteristics are infectious and will get us by this challenging period with a smile.
Laugh at it.
Spit at it.
The only thing to fear - is fear itself!
